The Colonel Gave My Wedding to His Sick Sister novel · Chapter 9 of 24

Chapter 9: Livia Needed It More

At eight the next morning I sat in a gray conference room at post headquarters in my blue dress from the hearing, and I did not touch the coffee.

The Inspector General's investigator was a colonel with short silver hair and a face that gave away nothing.

She sat at the head of the table with a folder in front of her.

Kirk sat on my left, in uniform, without his stars.

They had been taken at midnight and would stay in a drawer until she ruled.

Ansel sat across from us, with a clean bandage at his hairline and his hands folded.

He looked well rested, and he looked sorry.

"Colonel Drummond has alleged an improper relationship between General Maddox and a witness in an open investigation," the investigator said. "I will hear each of you once."

"Colonel," she said to Ansel. "Go ahead."

"Ma'am, I raise this with regret." His voice was gentle. "I was Miss Phelps's fiancé. I've watched her fall apart since the wedding."

"I've seen her in the general's car three times. I've seen the general leave her grandmother's farm after midnight."

"Last night he knelt on the floor of her kitchen in the dark with his arms around her."

I watched the investigator's eyes move to Kirk.

"Is that accurate, General?"

"The first two are," Kirk said. "I drive a witness home because she's been threatened. Last night I was at her kitchen table with a cut hand."

"And the last?"

"There was no kneeling."

"Miss Phelps."

I had planned to say something smart, and instead I said the truth.

"I kissed him," I said.

Ansel's head came up.

"Last night, in my grandmother's kitchen, I kissed General Maddox. He stopped it. He said he couldn't, because I'm a witness against a man he commands."
