Chapter 22: Her Own Keys

I slept until two in the afternoon, and when I woke the truck was still sitting in the yard with its bow on.

I put on jeans and my new boots and went out and sat in it.

The seat smelled like a new truck and a little like Jace.

The key turned over with a low growl.

I laughed out loud, alone, with both hands on the wheel.

My mother had gone to Chet's for the afternoon.

She had announced it at breakfast.

"He needs someone to fix his kitchen," she'd said. "He has a coffee maker older than Jace."

"He'll talk your ear off."

"He turns his ear off. I like him."

I drove down the long drive with the window open and the heater blowing warm on my knees.

It was a different drive than the one I had made in September.

Then I'd driven in with every dollar I owned in the back seat, crying at stoplights.

Now every gate had a name, and I knew whose cows grazed behind each one.

I stopped at the cemetery.

The cottonwood had dropped half its leaves, and the stone looked small under the empty branches.

I got out and stood in front of it.
