The rain quit at dawn, and the whole valley steamed.
By ten the tent had been staked down again and the mud had been covered with hay.
My mother had spent an hour on my hair, and a second hour on herself, and a third on telling Jace he could not see me.
He saw me anyway, for half a second, from a far window.
He stood in the yard with a hat in his hand, mouth open, and a rancher's wife had to drag him back by the sleeve.
I wore the green dress.
Lottie's bracelet hung on my left wrist, and my red lipstick was perfect.
Down the hill, at the low-water crossing, two hundred folding chairs sat in wet grass.
Every one of them was full.
There were neighbors, hands, the woman from the feed store, the shop owner, the man from Nebraska in his cap, the lawyer, and even the deputy in a clean shirt.
The creek ran loud and clear behind the chairs, full to its banks.
Chet waited at the top of the hill in his bolo tie.
"I thought you'd want me to walk you," he said.
"I'm going to walk myself."
"Good," said Chet. "I'd have cried."
"You'll cry anyway."
"I'll cry from the front row."
He kissed my cheek, took his seat, and I stood alone on the crest with the wind in my skirt.
Everyone turned.
I started down.
I walked the whole slope in my own boots, through wet grass, past two hundred faces, with my chin up and my hips swinging, and nobody in that crowd was looking at anything but the woman coming down the hill.
