Chapter 21: Clause Nine
The Queen Mother did not look at Gresham.
She looked at the ring of councillors, one face at a time.
"Lord Chancellor says my secrets are not so many as I think," she said. "He is correct. I have exactly one."
"Your Majesty," said Gresham softly. "Perhaps this is not the place."
"It is the only place," said Ottoline Ardenne. "That is the whole point of clause nine."
Her voice carried to the gallery.
"My grandmother kept a bakehouse in the river town of Estry."
"I have hidden it for forty years because a man put the parish record on my desk and told me that I was a laundress."
A gasp went round the ring.
Somewhere in the gallery a woman said, "A baker?"
Gresham's lips parted.
He had been saving that sentence for weeks, and I watched it die in his mouth.
"I am the granddaughter of a baker," said the queen. "My son is the great-grandson of one. I find I am not ashamed of it."
"I find that I am very tired of being ashamed."
She turned toward me.
"And I will say before this Council that the young woman at my son's side is the best baker I have eaten in forty years."
