Chapter 18: The Pass
Do-gyeom buckled her coat himself, in the dark, by the light of one lamp.
His hands were not quite steady, and he pretended they were.
"You stay on the signal post," he said. "Not a pace lower."
"I know."
"If the line breaks, you go straight to the postern."
"Yes, husband."
He kissed her.
It was hard and short, a captain's kiss, tasting of the cold tea he had gulped.
When he let go she kept hold of his collar a moment longer.
"Come back with both arms," she said.
"Yes, Strategist."
By first grey the Gwandan Gorge road was full of the Crown's army.
Ha-rin lay on her belly on a ledge of black rock sixty feet above it.
She had a red flag in her fist, and Bong-sun lay flat beside her, holding a bucket of arrows.
Below, the road ran like a ribbon between two cliffs, wide enough for four men abreast, no more.
At the foot of it, six thousand men were pouring into the throat of the pass.
This was the only road for the siege carts.
It was the same road where, weeks ago, she had stood at the edge with a kitchen knife and cut her hair.
