Chapter 23: The Second Wedding
They married a second time at sunset, in the courtyard, under her own name.
She wore red.
Bong-sun had sewn the wedding robe in three days, out of the Dowager's gift silk, with a heron stitched in white on the collar and no gold anywhere.
"I'm not a princess," Ha-rin had told her.
"I know. That's why it's red."
Gwang-ho wound the black cord around their clasped hands again, and the envoy stood witness with his hands tucked in his sleeves.
"I, Kang Do-gyeom," said Do-gyeom, "take Seo Ha-rin as my wife.
I'll follow her counsel and guard her back. I never lied to her, and I never will."
The courtyard laughed.
"I, Seo Ha-rin," she said, and it came out clear, and she did not shake at all, "take Kang Do-gyeom for mine.
I'll tell him the truth first, every time. And I will never leave him alone on a wall."
The cheering lasted until the pigs were carved.
She did not remember the feast.
She remembered his hand under the table on her knee for three hours, and the way he did not look at her once.
Then the door of the room above the north gate shut behind them, and the noise fell away to a murmur.
The red quilt was on the bed.
A single lamp burned low on the shelf.
Do-gyeom stood with his back against the door.
He was breathing slowly.
"Ha-rin," he said.
"Husband."
"Stand there."
She stood in the middle of the floor in the red wedding robe, with the cord still tied loosely around her wrist.
It was strange to hear that voice.
It was the one he used on the field.
It was calm and low and sure, and every inch of her skin woke up.
"You told me this morning," he said, "that tonight I was to give the orders."
