Chapter 5: One Gate
The whole hall stood up to look at me.
Chairs scraped. Somebody knocked over a mason jar of tea.
Elder Pemberton lifted one hand.
The noise stopped.
"Alpha Blackburn," she said. "Sit down."
"With respect, Elder, I've waited three years."
"Then you can wait for a chair."
A few people laughed.
Dominic didn't sit.
Elder Pemberton looked at me over her glasses.
"Is it true, child? Are you Mireya of Ironclaw?"
I could have said no.
I could have said my name was Wren and walked out and packed a bag.
Rhett's hand was still around mine under the table.
He didn't squeeze. He didn't pull. He just held on.
"Yes," I said. "I was."
The murmur went around the hall.
"I cut the bond three years ago," I said. "The night he left me in the fire."
"Left you?" Dominic laughed. "Elder, she ran. She let my pack dig a grave for nothing."
"You dug a grave," I said. "You didn't dig through the east hall."
Elder Pemberton's hand came up again.
"Enough. Both of you."
She folded her hands on the table.
"The law is old and it's simple. A broken bond must be ratified before the council. This one never was."
Dominic smiled.
"So the council will hear it," she went on. "Saturday morning, the last day of the summit. Here in this hall."
"And how will the council decide?" Rhett asked.
His voice was calm. His hand wasn't.
"The same way we always have," Elder Pemberton said. "The woman calls her wolf. If the bond is truly cut, her wolf will say so to me, plainly. If her wolf won't speak, the bond stands."
