Chapter 10: The Ring

Neither of us slept after the pines.

Rorik sat on the edge of the bed with his palm flat over the white scar.

"A crescent on you, and the same crescent on me," I said. "Something made them both."

"The Goddess, or you," he said. "I don't know which frightens me more."

I did not know either.

The council of Ironclad met the next noon, and they wanted my head.

There were five of them, grey-bearded and hard-faced, seated on a long bench at the end of the hall.

I stood in front of them with Rorik's cloak over my tunic and his mark burning under the cloth.

The oldest of them tapped his stick on the floor.

"The Alpha has taken a Moonflare Luna for his mate," he said. "Without council, in the open, in the middle of a war."

"I took her," Rorik said. "I don't need council to do it."

"You need it to make her Luna of this pack."

"She is the Luna of her own."

"Her pack is dead, and her Beta ran. She holds no land and has brought no gift." The old man's pale eyes found me. "What does she bring Ironclad but a curse?"

Nobody spoke.

I had faced a sword nine times, and I had never been so exposed.

"The Beta of Moonflare poisoned your river," I said. "He broke into your hold and took a prisoner. He sounded the retreat horn on the ridge in front of twenty of your warriors."

"That proves the Beta's guilt," another elder said. "It does not prove yours."

"It proves I told the truth at the well."

"It proves you had warning of a thing a Luna should not know."

I felt the room tilt.

It was a fair answer.

The only way I had known Harlan's plan was through lives I could not explain to men who had not lived them.
