Chapter 12: The Stone of Oaths

Rorik spread a map of the valleys across the table and put his knife through the middle of it.

"The Stone of Oaths," he said. "Here."

It was a standing rock on a high bare ridge, three days' ride north, where the old packs had once sworn their peace.

Joren leaned on the table and studied the heights around it.

"Open ground on three sides. The only cover is the pines on the east slope."

"Harlan knows it," I said.

"He chose it."

"He chose it because the Stone is the only place both packs would swear on," Nessa said from her chair by the fire. "A lie spoken there is a lie in front of the Goddess."

Nobody answered that.

I stood with my arms folded and looked at the little ridge on the map.

He had written, alone and unarmed.

He had written that the children were safe.

"I'll go," I said.

"No," Rorik said.

"There are forty of them. The youngest is a baby. If he's lying, I can't leave."

"If he's telling the truth about the children, he's telling the truth about the trap."

"Both can be true."

"Yes." Rorik's voice was flat. "That is why you're not going alone."

"He said alone."

"He said a great many things."

Joren cleared his throat.

"My brother's right. You walk up to the Stone with a pack at your back, and he kills the children in front of you. You walk up alone, and he kills you."

"Then what do you suggest?"
