Chapter 17: Before the Stone

The warrior with the blade on my back lay on the grass with his throat torn out.

The black wolf stood over him, and its grey eyes found me.

Then the fur drew back from its shoulders, and Rorik rose naked and bloody from the ground.

Joren threw him a cloak without looking.

Rorik crossed the grass and cut the rope on my wrists with one pass of a knife.

His hands were shaking.

"I told you to look east," he said.

"I looked."

"You didn't see me."

"You were late."

His mouth twisted, and for one breath he pressed his brow against my temple.

Then he turned to face the ridge, and I turned with him.

Three hundred Moonflare swords on the west road.

Two hundred and fifty Ironclad wolves in a ragged half circle around the Stone, in fur and in skin, their teeth bared.

Between them, in the moonlight, the standing rock, and Harlan Crowe with his hands spread.

"Peace," he called. "Please. Nobody needs to bleed on the Stone."

"You had a sword on my mate," Rorik said.

"I had a warrior who misunderstood me." Harlan sounded grieved. "I'll answer for him. But there's a thing every wolf here needs to hear, and I would rather say it in front of the Goddess than in a corner."

"Say it, then."

Harlan walked to the foot of the Stone and laid his palm on it.

Nothing happened to him.

I watched his hand, and I felt sick.

"I am Beta of Moonflare," he said. His voice carried across the ridge. "I served her father twenty years. I loved this girl as I'd have loved my own, and I tell you now, before the Stone, that Sabine Marrow is not what she seems."

The Moonflare warriors muttered.
