Chapter 21: The Right of Blood

Sabine's POV

I shifted before I decided to.

The change took me gently, without the old pain, and I came down on four white paws in the grass.

Rorik's black wolf was already beside me.

We ran for the east pines.

Harlan had a start of forty paces and a lifetime of knowing how to disappear.

He had never once had to run from anything.

He ran badly.

The burned hand dragged at him, and I could hear his breath tearing in and out.

Behind us came a long howl that rose from Ironclad throats and broke over the ridge.

Moonflare answered it.

I had never heard my pack's voices join an enemy's, and I ran faster for the sound.

He reached the first trees and turned with a short knife in his good hand.

I hit him in the chest.

We went down together in the needles, and I felt the knife skid off my ribs.

Rorik's weight landed beside us, and his teeth closed on Harlan's wrist.

The knife fell.

Harlan screamed.

I let go and stepped back, panting, and shifted.

I stood naked in the pines with my chest heaving, and Rorik came up from the ground beside me with Harlan's arm still locked in his grip.

"Don't kill him here," I said.

"Sabine."

"Not in the dark where nobody can see." My voice shook. "Bring him to the Stone."

Rorik looked at me, and then he nodded once.

Joren appeared out of the trees with ten wolves, and between them they hauled Harlan back up the slope.

The ridge was full of people.

Both packs had stayed.

They stood in the moonlight in a great ring around the broken Stone, wolves and warriors and women and small children wrapped in cloaks, and nobody spoke.
