Chapter 22: The Morning After

I woke with the sun on my face and no fear at all.

For a moment I did not know what that was.

Then I knew.

Nine times I had woken in my own bed with the sun on the window and a war waiting at the door.

This morning I woke in a tent on the lee side of the ridge, wrapped in a wolfskin, with a man's arm across my waist.

I touched my throat.

The skin there was smooth.

I pulled a lock of hair across my eyes and looked at it in the light.

Black.

Black to the root, all the way, with no white streak at the temple at all.

"Still there?" Rorik said behind me, in a voice thick with sleep.

"Still here."

"Say it again."

"I'm alive."

His arm tightened, and he pressed his mouth to the back of my neck.

"I had the dream last night," he said.

I went still.

"The ninth, and the eighth, all of them. I woke in the middle and thought, here it comes."

"And?"

"And you were in my arms, and the dream was gone." His breath shook against my skin. "I slept the rest of the night. I haven't slept the night through since the spring."

I turned over.

His eyes were red-rimmed and clear, and his left wrist, pale where the braid had been, lay on the pillow between us.

I took it and kissed the bare place.

"You said you'd be angry at me today," I said.

"I did."

"Are you?"

"A little." His mouth tilted. "I'll get over it."

"How long?"

"I'm thinking a few decades."
