Chapter 18: Mirror
The mirror stood in the corner of his bedroom, tall as a door, in a black iron frame.
I had never once looked into it.
I stood in front of it now, naked, with my hands at my sides and the lamp turned all the way up.
Griffin stood behind me in the doorway of the bathroom, in his jeans, with his arms folded.
"You've been avoiding that mirror for six weeks," he said.
"I have not."
"You dress in the dark.
"You turn your back when you pass it."
"Fine," I said.
"I have."
My throat felt tight.
There was a woman in the glass with a black bob and gray eyes.
She had big soft shoulders, and breasts that hung heavy over a round belly.
Her hips flared wide.
Her thighs touched all the way to the knee.
I had spent thirty years looking at that woman in department-store dressing rooms under green light, picking her apart.
"Stay there," I said.
"I'm not moving."
"Come stand behind me.
"Don't touch."
He crossed the room.
He stopped a foot away.
I felt the heat of his chest on my back without any contact.
In the mirror I saw him rise over my head.
He looked down.
He didn't look at himself or at the room.
He looked at me, only me, in the glass.
"Tell me what you see," I said.
"I see a woman I'd walk into the lake for."
"Be specific."
He breathed out.
"Your shoulders," he said.
"They're strong.
"They've been lifting trays since you were fourteen.
"I want to put my mouth on the freckles on your arm."
"Go on."
"Your breasts are heavy and soft and they sit just so on your ribs.
"The nipples are dark rose, and they're tight now, because I'm talking.
