Chapter 24: Dahlgren's
Water Street was white and silent at half past four.
The snow had stopped around three, and nobody had walked the sidewalk yet.
Griffin and I left the only prints on it, one big pair and one small.
The lamp over the shop door made a yellow circle in the dark.
There was a sheet of cardboard taped to the glass.
Gran had lettered it with a fat black marker, in her slanting hand, with the capital letters underlined twice.
DAHLGREN'S BAKERY.
OPEN AT SIX.
UNDER THE SAME MANAGEMENT AS ALWAYS.
THE BAKER KEEPS WHO SHE LIKES, SO WAIT YOUR TURN.
I read it twice.
Then I put my forehead against the cold glass and laughed until my breath fogged the sign.
"She's going to be insufferable," Griffin said.
"She's been insufferable for seventy-two years."
"I like her."
"Everyone likes her.
"That's what makes it unbearable."
I unlocked the door and we went in, stamping the snow off our boots.
The kitchen was dark and warm.
I flipped on the lights over the long steel table, and the old building woke around me.
The ovens ticked, the radiator knocked, and the whole familiar smell of flour and yeast and wood rose up.
I was home.
I stood there with my coat on and let it fill me up.
Griffin took the coat off my shoulders and hung it on its hook.
Then he took off his own and hung it beside mine.
"I have work to do," I said.
"A hundred and twenty croissants."
"I know."
"The ovens have to be lit."
"I'll light them."
"And you can't help until I tell you."
"I'll sit," he said.
"Where?"
He looked around and found the flour stool by the deck oven, and sat on it, and folded his big hands in his lap.
