Chapter 8: The Claimed Right

The Frost Gathering was held in a stone lodge on the north shore, with a fire in a hearth big enough to roast a deer.

Three hundred people stood in that hall, and every one of them turned to look at me.

I wore my black velvet dress with the long sleeves, my good boots, and my grandmother's pearl earrings.

I had made up my mind in the car that I was not going to hide behind Griffin.

I walked beside him, and I lifted my chin.

"They're staring," I whispered.

"They're looking at you," he said, "because I walked in with you."

He had one hand at the small of my back, and it did not leave.

At the far end of the hall stood a carved chair of black oak, and a man in his sixties waited beside it.

He had the same pale blue eyes as Delphine.

Delphine herself stood at his shoulder in a red dress, smiling.

"Alpha," the man said.

"Before the dance, there is the Reading."

The room went quiet.

Griffin's hand tightened on my back, and I felt him draw a breath.

"At Harbor Night," the man said, in a voice built for halls, "the Alpha bid upon himself, and gave the winning to Miss Etta Dahlgren.

"By the oldest law of this pack, that is the Claimed Right.

"I will read it for the one who does not know it."

He unrolled a sheet of yellow paper.

"The wolf who buys himself and gives himself away has named his mate before the pack.
