Chapter 19: What Zeus Owes
They set my trial for dawn and put my mother's in the same hour.
By the time I got out of the Hall, the sky over Olympus had gone the color of a bruise.
I found my father where Hermes said I would.
He was in the Grove of the Hind, standing in the snow with his back to the empty tree.
He had no crown and no cloak.
He was looking at the oat trough.
"You come here," I said.
He didn't turn around.
"Once a year," Zeus said.
"On the night of the first snow.
I stand at the wall, and I never go in."
"Why not?"
"Because she would have looked at me."
His voice cracked on the last word.
I walked up beside him and stood in the snow.
I didn't take his hand.
"I want to say some things," I said, "and I want you not to answer until I'm done."
"Say them."
"You knew what Hera did before the snow stopped falling.
You knew it from the first day.
You sat at that table every night for eighteen years and ate with her."
