Chapter 15: The Lobby
On Monday at nine the bank lobby smelled of carpet cleaner and burnt coffee.
Faye sat in the chair across from the branch manager's desk with her hands flat on her knees.
My grandfather sat on her left, and I sat on her right.
The manager slid a printed history across the desk, forty pages stapled in the corner.
"It's everything since the account opened, Miss Odell," she said. "You're entitled to every line."
"Thank you," said Faye.
She turned the first page, and she didn't flinch at any of them.
At nine-twenty the glass door opened and my father came in, and my mother was behind him.
He was wearing yesterday's shirt, and he hadn't shaved.
My grandfather had called him at seven and told him the time and the place, and had given him no choice about it.
"Dad," my father said.
"Sit."
He sat.
My mother stayed standing by the door with her purse in both hands.
"Here is what's going to happen," my grandfather said. "I've spoken to a lawyer. She's a woman I trust, and she's already read the notary's page from Saturday."
My father shut his eyes.
"There are two roads. On one, Faye walks to the police station down the street and the lawyer goes with her."
"Dad..."
"On the other, you sign three papers right here. Faye has chosen which road. Ask her."
My father looked at Faye.
Faye took a breath.
"I don't want you in prison, Uncle Dennis," she said. "I want my mother's money back. All of it."
I felt something go tight in my chest.
