Chapter 11: Nonna's Envelope
The judge put down her pen.
"The court has heard the sister," she said. "The court has also heard a housekeeper, a brother and a hospital form. They do not agree."
My father's lawyer stood to speak, and she lifted one hand.
"I will not strip a young woman of her vote on conflicting accounts of an event four years old," she said. "Nor will I leave it entirely unexamined. The shares stay with Signorina Falconieri. I will rule in full in fourteen days."
She looked at me over her glasses.
"I advise you to use the time well."
That was all.
Outside on the courthouse steps my father passed me without a word, with Ugo a pace behind him and Fiammetta a pace behind Ugo.
She did not turn her head.
I stood on the stone steps in the cold, and Hanna slipped her hand into mine.
"She lied," I said.
"Yes."
"She looked right at him, and she said it."
"Yes," said Hanna. "But look how she said it."
I looked at her.
"Like a person who is being dragged," Hanna said. "That is how I would say it, too."
That night I lay on the narrow camp bed the maids had set up in the piano room, and I did not sleep.
At midnight the door opened.
Fiammetta stood in the corridor in a long gray nightdress, with her hair down and her feet bare.
She held the cream envelope in both hands.
I sat up.
"Come to gloat?" I said.
It came out meaner than I meant, and she took it without a flinch.
"Yes," she said. "Please. I deserve it."
She came in and shut the door.
She sat on the floor under the window with her back to the wall.
