Chapter 14: Care of Signora Falconieri
On Sunday my father held his usual family lunch, and he expected all of us at the table.
Fiammetta came down in my gray cardigan with her chin up.
Gaetano came down with a folded paper in his jacket and would not tell me what it was.
Hanna came down because she was hungry.
Ugo sat at the far end and looked at his plate.
My aunt and uncle took their old places on my father's right, the way they had at every dinner since I was born.
The oldest man on the board sat opposite them, because my father had invited the board to be seen at his table.
He gave me a small, careful nod.
"Nerina," my aunt said brightly. "You look thin. Eat."
"Thank you, Zia."
"You will forgive us for the other night. Your uncle was upset."
"Of course," I said. "You called me the girl who pushed a child."
My uncle coughed into his napkin.
"Let us not start," my father said.
"I haven't started," I said. "I only have a question for Zio."
Gaetano put his hand in his jacket and slid the paper across the cloth to me.
I unfolded it.
It was a bank printout from the company's household account, two columns of dates and sums, twelve lines long.
Every line was marked: Care of Signora Falconieri, Senior.
Every line was paid to my uncle.
"Zio," I said. "Nonna's care cost a great deal last year."
"She was old," said my uncle. "Nurses are expensive."
"There were no nurses."
I turned the page toward the table so the old board member could read it.
"The housekeeper tells me Nonna had one nurse, three mornings a week, and Papa's own doctor paid for her. This money went to you, and it went to you every month of her last year."
