Chapter 5: Patient States
The Falconieri Maritime tower stood over the harbor, forty floors of glass, and the boardroom was on the thirty-ninth.
I walked into it on Monday morning with the notary on my left and a borrowed navy jacket buttoned to my chin.
The board had been waiting for my father to open the meeting.
There were six men and one woman around the long table, all older than my brothers, and all of them stared.
My father sat at the head, with Ugo at his right hand.
"Nerina," my father said smoothly, "this is a private board meeting. You are a guest of the family, and I must ask you to wait outside."
"I am a shareholder," I said.
I put the notary's letter on the table and pushed it down the polished wood until it stopped in front of the oldest man.
He read it.
He read it again, slowly, and the color left his face.
"Signor chairman," he said. "This certifies that the signorina holds fifty-one percent."
"It certifies that my mother was ill," said my father.
"It certifies it under the seal of the Genoa notaries," said the old man. "I have known your mother fifty years. She never wrote a foolish line in her life."
The woman at the far end looked at me with open interest.
"How old is she?" someone whispered.
"Sixteen," said the old man. "And the vote is hers."
The whispering stopped.
My father turned his hand palm up on the table.
"Then we welcome the young shareholder," he said. "She will of course take time to learn. In the meantime I propose that the family trustee manage her interest until she is ready."
"I decline," I said.
"You haven't heard the terms."
"I read them on your desk. Until I am twenty-five."
I did not look at Ugo, but I heard him exhale through his nose.
