Chapter 20: Yet
Marisol's POV
"It's yet," I said again, because he hadn't moved.
Rain ran off my chin and down inside my collar.
"I'm not done being angry," I said. "I may be angry for years. But I stood at the window of that dark house for an hour, and the only place I wanted to be was here."
Wyatt reached out and drew me over the threshold by the front of my coat.
He shut the door on the storm.
The cottage was warm from the woodstove, and a single lamp burned on the long table, beside a stack of papers.
He had drawn up the purchase offer for the old block, and it lay square in the lamplight.
I swept it onto the floor with my forearm.
"That's for Monday."
"Yes, ma'am."
"Don't ma'am me."
He smiled, and then he stopped smiling, because I had started on the buttons of his shirt.
My fingers were cold and clumsy, and he caught them in his hands and held them against his chest until they warmed.
"You're soaked," he said.
"Then take it off me."
He did it slowly, and that was the difference.
He peeled the wet coat down my arms and hung it on the hook by the stove.
He unlaced my boots, one at a time, kneeling in front of me, and set them to dry.
He drew the elastic from the end of my braid and combed the weave out with his fingers, and my hair fell heavy and damp down my back.
I stood in the stove light and let him, with my heart going hard.
"Sweater," he said.
I lifted my arms.
He pulled it up and over my head, and then my undershirt, and his rough thumbs followed the lines of my ribs.
He kissed my collarbone, and then the swell of my breast above the cup of my bra, and I made a low sound.
"Last time I couldn't wait," he said against my skin. "Tonight I'm going to take all the time you'll give me."
