Chapter 10: The Forge

"A month ago I found Myrrha in Father's study at night," Lampos said.

His voice cracked on the first word.

He kept going.

"She had his betrothal letter flat on the desk. She was copying it, line by line, with his seal beside her. I asked what she was doing and she said she was practicing her handwriting."

"Lampos," Myrrha said softly. "You were drinking that night."

"I wasn't."

"You've always been so shy, so easily confused."

"I was not confused." He turned to Aethon. "The copy said the bride was the daughter he took in. The original said Helia. I read both. I didn't say anything because she was crying, and you told me to be kind to her."

The hall was silent.

Aethon had gone the color of old paper.

"That's a lie," he said.

"Then ask Father," Lampos said. "He's on the road."

Eous had taken a step back from Myrrha's stool.

He didn't seem to know he'd done it.

Myrrha's eyes were wide and wet and perfectly honest.

"I only wanted to see my name written once," she said. "I never meant it to be a letter. I'm so sorry, Aethon. I didn't think you'd read it that way."

Aethon took a long breath.

He did what he had done his whole life, and I watched him do it.

He chose the person who was crying.

"She is a child who misses her mother," he said, hoarse. "Lampos has brought you a story and I'll hear no more of it."
