Chapter 19: The Sea Is Hers
The gods drifted out of the wedding hall in twos and threes, whispering.
I stayed on the dais with the deed in my hand.
It was heavier than a roll of paper should be.
Under it, the whole Sunset Cloud Sea moved in slow, rose-colored waves, and it was mine.
"What will you do with it?" Phlegon asked.
"Open it."
"To whom?"
"To the cooks who carried water for you for twenty years." I looked at the doors. "To the soldiers who stood in the snow. To anyone who hasn't been in a hall like this."
He smiled.
It was the smile I was learning to wait for, the slow one that started in his eyes.
"They'll make a mess."
"I'm counting on it."
The courtiers came to me before they left.
I hadn't expected that.
The woman who had laughed loudest in the Hall of Gowns stood in front of me with her hands knotted together.
"I'm sorry," she said. "I thought it was easier not to look."
"It was easier," I said.
Her face crumpled.
"Don't tell me it's all right," she said. "I'd know you were lying."
"It isn't all right." I tilted my head. "But you said it where people could hear, and that counts for more than you think."
She bowed low and went out fast.
The rest came after her, one at a time.
I took each one the same way.
It tired me out more than the trial had.
When the hall was almost empty, the seamstress of the Sun Palace came up the aisle with three gowns over her arms.
They were cloud-silk, every one of them, stitched with fresh sun-thread.
