Chapter 9: Trial of Flame

Helia's POV

The petition arrived at noon, carried by a Sun Palace herald with a gold-edged scroll and a very nervous face.

Aethon had gone to the northern court.

He wasn't asking for my return anymore.

He was accusing me.

By the time I came into the great hall with Phlegon beside me, the lords were already seated on both sides and the regent sat at the head with her ash staff across her knees.

My brothers stood in the center of the floor.

Myrrha sat on a stool between them with her bandaged arms in her lap.

I looked for Lampos and didn't see him.

"The accusation is simple," Aethon said. "In four days, the Fire God's core has gone from ruin to flame. Five days ago he could not light a candle."

"This is true," the regent said.

"My sister Helia walked into the north alone. Now the god is whole." Aethon let it ring. "She has always been sickly, weak, a girl who couldn't hold a torch."

He pointed at the hearth.

"Yet she lit your hearth with her bare hand. How does a weak girl do that, unless she stole it from someone?"

"Stolen it," I said.

"From him," Eous said quietly. "She is draining the Fire God, and calling it a miracle."

Gasps ran along the benches.

Myrrha lifted her eyes.

"I didn't want to say it," she whispered. "I was afraid. When I touched the altar, I felt something pull at me. Something hungry. I thought I was dying."
