Chapter 6: The Gate

I went down to the gate alone, and Roz followed behind me with a shovel.

The gate was a rusted bar across the lake road, with a sign my aunt had painted: NEUTRAL GROUND. NO PACK BUSINESS.

Conall stood on the far side of it.

He had shaved, and the shaving had cut him under the jaw.

"I'm not coming through," he said. "I know I'm not allowed. I only want to talk."

"You have until I count to ten," I said.

"Teagan, I've read the summary three times. I went over the scans in my head. I was wrong about the bleed, and I was wrong about..."

"Say anything else with my name in it, and I turn around."

He closed his mouth.

I had not planned that sentence. It came up from somewhere under my ribs.

"Then what do I call you?" he asked.

"Nothing."

"Teagan..."

I turned.

"Wait," he said. "Wait. I'm sorry. I won't say it."

I stopped with my back to him.

"These are the terms," I said, and my voice came out level, which surprised us both. "You stay on the road side of that bar. You talk about our daughter and nothing else. You don't use my name, you don't touch the gate, and you don't tell me you love me."

"I haven't said..."

"You were about to."

He was silent.

"Those are the terms," I said again. "Say yes, or go home."

"Yes."

I faced him.

His eyes were red at the rims, and his hands hung open at his sides.
