Chapter 12: The Open Gate

Bi Soo-ryeon put Si-hyeon's iron sword on the infirmary table as carefully.

"Your own," she said. "Plain, ugly, and exactly where you left it."

Si-hyeon picked it up.

The scabbard had been cleaned and oiled.

The blade ran true from hilt to tip.

There was a small nick near the guard that he had put there himself eight years ago and never told anyone about.

"Where did you find it?"

"The Lord sent men for it the night he brought you in, before the gate lanterns were even lit."

"He did what?"

"He wouldn't let it lie in the dirt."

She poured a cup of white peony tea and pushed it over, with the satisfied look of a woman who had made the recipe right the first time.

"He kept it by his bed for eleven days. I assumed he was planning to melt it down."

Si-hyeon stared at the sword.

It had not been in the armory with the spare steel.

It had been beside the Demon's bed.

"He says he's too busy to see you off," she added.

"Don't take it to heart. He'll be sitting on the north wall with a persimmon, pretending not to look."

Si-hyeon drank the tea and said nothing.

The last night was long.

He had told himself he would pack.

Instead he stood in the middle of Gwi-han's chamber with his hands full of nothing.

Gwi-han came in, shut the door, and leaned against it.

For a while they just looked at each other.
