Chapter 18: The Red Pill
Si-hyeon walked into the river unarmed.
The ford was knee-deep and clear, running over flat stones, and on the far bank two thousand men in the colors of eight sects stood in ranks under their banners.
Behind him, on the near bank, Gwi-han sat on a black horse with a hundred riders at his back.
He did not follow.
Si-hyeon had asked him to give his word, and Gwi-han had given it with a face like stone.
In the middle of the far bank stood a platform of raw planks, and on it was a cage.
It was iron, and it was small, and Tak Ha-neul knelt inside.
His white robe was torn, and one eye was swollen shut.
When he saw Si-hyeon coming across the water, he pressed his face against the bars.
"Senior brother," he rasped. "Go back."
"Hush."
"He's going to."
"I know."
Gye Dong-pil stood on the platform in his immaculate blue with a cup of tea in one hand.
He looked like a man at the theatre.
On either side of him sat the heads of the great sects, grey and fat and stern in their robes.
In the center sat an old man in plain brown whom Si-hyeon recognized from the Gathering.
He was the Alliance Chief, who had once told Si-hyeon that his sword stance was adequate.
Si-hyeon stopped at the foot of the platform and bowed to the Chief, not to Gye.
"Chief. Elders. I came as asked."
