Chapter 6: Sunday in Queens

Colleen came across the square without hurrying.

She walked straight through the snow on the little lawn inside the railings.

The spaniel women had stopped again.

The old man from number nine folded his newspaper.

Up close she was more beautiful than she'd been at twenty-three.

Her coat was cream cashmere, and there was a diamond on her left hand the size of a pea.

"Look at you," she said. "Throwing my baby sister into the street in her pajamas."

"She was in my robe. I took it back."

Colleen laughed, the big warm laugh that had carried down every hall of this house when we were girls.

We'd shared a bath when we were eight.

We'd shared a bed at sleepovers until we were fifteen.

At nineteen, on the beach at Wellfleet, I'd told her the one thing I had never told anyone.

She glanced at Winslow on my step, and then back at me, and her green eyes danced.

"Honestly, Margery, I don't know what you're so angry about."

"Don't you?"

"I did you a favor." She put her gloved hand on my arm. "You got exactly who you wanted. You should be thanking me."

I felt Winslow go still behind me.

Colleen felt it too.

Her smile got wider.

"Shall I tell him?" she murmured. "It's such a sweet story."

I took her hand off my arm.

"You'll tell him nothing."

"Oh, I think he'd like to hear it."

"You ran off with my groom the night before my wedding," I said, loud enough for the square. "Your mother cried in my kitchen for a month."

The smile slipped a little.

"And who sent Keira to my husband?"

Colleen opened her mouth.

Then she shrugged, a pretty little shrug.

"I introduced them at a party in August. Is that a crime now? The Endicotts have had our mother on her knees for twenty years. Somebody in my family ought to get something back."

"Your mother worked for my father, not for the Endicotts."

"Same thing on this square."

Behind her, the door of the house across the way was still open.
