The Diary That Held the Votes Against Me novel · Chapter 6 of 24

Chapter 6: Five of Fourteen

On Sunday morning Rafe knocked on my back door with a notebook and a thermos.

"I made a list," he said.

"Of what?"

"Fourteen dates."

I let him in.

We spread the diary and his notebook across my mother's kitchen table, and he read me each date beside each signature while I checked it against the school calendar on my phone.

The Institute posts every closure and every field trip in an email.

I had saved all of them, because I save everything.

"September thirteenth," Rafe said. "Storm. Closed."

"Check."

"September twenty-seventh."

I scrolled.

"State inspectors. Students stayed home, kitchens were sealed."

"Check. October eighteenth. Boiler."

"Check."

"October twenty-fifth."

"The farm. The diary stayed in Chef's office."

"Check." He put his pen down. "That's four."

I kept scrolling.

My thumb stopped on a line near the bottom of the list.

"The eighth of November," I said. "Chef was at a conference in Chicago. She cancelled Thursday service and told us to read at home."

Rafe looked at his notebook.

"The eighth," he said. "Signed by someone named in the third row, and dated in Delaney's handwriting."

"Five."

"Five of fourteen."

He pulled the diary toward him and turned the pages with the side of his hand, carefully.

"So five votes against you were signed on days nobody was in that building," he said. "That leaves nine."
