Chapter 24: The Doorman

"Do they," I said.

I walked past her, down the stage steps and out to the lobby.

She followed me, because she couldn't stand not to.

The front desk clerk was a young man I'd never met.

"Would you look up the penthouse for me?" I said. "Arriving last Sunday. Departing Tuesday."

He typed.

"Augusta Ballantyne," he read. "Paid in full in advance. Nine nights."

"Paid with what?"

He swallowed. "A personal card, ma'am. It cleared."

I had turned away a state senator over my own waitlist.

I wasn't going to start breaking my rules for her.

"Then you're my guest, Mrs. Ballantyne," I said. "Checkout is eleven o'clock Tuesday."

"I know when checkout is, darling. I set it."

"Then you'll find it easy to remember."

The lenders closed the sale at five o'clock that afternoon.

At seven the next morning I walked up the steps of The Ballantyne as its owner.

The doorman was at his post in the gray coat with the brass buttons.

He opened the door and stood back from it.

"Good morning, Miss Bledsoe," he said.

I took a small envelope out of my bag and handed it to him.
