Chapter 26: Gold

Dorrie opened her door before I knocked.

She was in a hotel robe with her glasses on and every light in the room switched on.

There was a card on the bed, cream, with the crest on it.

"She gave me this in the elevator," Dorrie said. "She'd already written it out."

I picked it up.

It was my mother's hand, blue ink, the same pen as Edmund's note.

I kept the Ballantyne books for eight years. I cannot stay silent.

My sister's bid was paid for by Wells Fordyce. The pledges were his money in coffee cans.

I read it twice.

"If you say that on her stage," I said, "the creditor's bank pulls its letter."

"And the sale comes apart, and the lenders sell it again in the fall."

Dorrie sat down on the bed.

"Her new backers are already lined up. She was proud of them."

"And you get the company."

"CEO of three hotels. Her shares. A car that isn't tracked."

Dorrie laughed without any fun in it.

"She said, I'll finally have the daughter I paid for."

"She said that?"

"In the elevator. Between the fourth floor and the penthouse."
