Chapter 28: One Suitcase
I stood on the kitchen step and looked at her.
The doorman waited a few feet off with his hands behind his back.
"You did raise me," I said.
She lifted her chin, waiting for the rest.
"You taught me every guest's name. You taught me to read a ledger before I could drive."
"You taught me to stand up straight while a room full of people stared at me."
I came down one step.
"I used every bit of it tonight," I said. "That's what I owed you. It's paid."
Her mouth opened.
For once, nothing came out of it.
I turned to the doorman.
"Mrs. Ballantyne is a paying guest until eleven tomorrow," I said. "Take her up in the service elevator."
"Yes, Miss Bledsoe."
"And send her a pot of coffee. On the house."
My mother's face went white under the streetlight.
The coffee was the worst thing I'd done to her all night, and we both knew it.
I went back inside to my party.
At ten fifty-five the next morning, the lobby was fuller than it had been for the auction.
The housekeepers found reasons to dust the same column.
The pastry chef carried one tray of croissants back and forth across the lobby three times.
