Chapter 29: Two Fathers
The deck bar was a door Dale had laid across two rain barrels in 2020.
It had held up a lot of elbows.
Tonight it held up two.
Dale sat on one stool in his Braves cap with a jar of something brown.
Edmund sat on the other in his shirtsleeves, with the same jar.
Between them on the door was a bottle with no label, and a bowl of boiled peanuts nobody was eating.
Dorrie and Nana were behind the kitchen window with the light off, not hiding very well.
Wells and I stopped at the top of the deck stairs.
Dale saw us and pointed at the bench behind him without turning around.
"Sit," he said. "You can listen. You can't help."
We sat.
Dale turned the jar around in his big hands.
"What was she like at five?" he said to Edmund.
Edmund didn't answer right away.
"At five she wouldn't let the bellmen carry her bag," he said finally.
"At nine she ran the hotel's lost-and-found. She kept a ledger in crayon."
"Crayon," Dale said.
"Green crayon. She said green was for things that might come back."
