Chapter 31: Beach Wedding
"What's the math for?" I said.
"Four tiers on sand," Dorrie said. "Sand isn't a foundation. Ask any developer."
Wells sat up in bed behind me with his hair flattened on one side.
"Don't put it on the sand," he said.
"I'm not asking you. You broke an ice machine."
"That's fair," Wells said, and lay back down.
"When?" Dorrie said to me. "I need a date. Buttercream has a shelf life."
Wells answered from under his arm.
"April thirteenth."
We both turned and looked at him.
He moved his arm off his face.
"The day before your birthday," he said to both of us. "So the fourteenth always wakes up the morning after a good day."
I didn't say anything, because I couldn't.
She wrote APRIL 13 at the top of the page and underlined it twice.
"Fine," she said. "He can stay."
On the thirteenth of April the beach park was full of folding chairs.
Two hundred people sat in the sand in their good clothes and their bare feet.
The Lantern sat behind them across the road, every letter lit.
The Ohio couple had moved their April week to make it, and brought buckeyes for everyone.
The Charleston woman sat in the front row in a hat the size of a tire.
The nurse sat next to her with her cane across her knees.
The doorman had the aisle seat, in his gray coat and brass buttons, on the sand.
Half of The Ballantyne's staff had come on their day off.
The pink-haired woman had her good phone up.
Nana stood at the end of the aisle under an arch of driftwood that the bait shop man had built.
She'd been ordained on the internet in November and wouldn't let anyone else near the job.
Wells stood beside her in a light gray suit with his shirt open at the collar.
His mama was in the front row in a blue dress, already crying.
I stood at the top of the dune in an ivory silk dress with thin straps, barefoot.
Dale was on my left in a new suit and his Braves cap, which he'd refused to take off.
Edmund was on my right in his navy three-piece, the same one, pressed.
Dale looked across me at Edmund.
"You ready?"
"No," Edmund said.
"Me neither. Let's go."
They walked me down through the sand between them.
Dale held my arm too tight.
Edmund held it too loose.
Halfway down I stopped and fixed it.
I took Edmund's hand and put it through my arm properly, and held it there.
He looked at me.
Then he looked straight ahead and didn't let go.
