Chapter 19: The Prince Falls
The guards did not take them.
They came down the stair in a rush, with their torches high and their swords out, and found three kneeling people in the dust, and a baker's wife behind them with a ladle.
Up in the plaza the crowd had followed the Priest's guards inside.
By the time Shiori climbed out of the circle room, the Hall of Dawn was full from wall to wall.
It was the same hall.
It had the same pillars, the same sun in gold on the ceiling, and the same thick red carpet where the clerk had once stamped her paper.
Only the people had changed.
Nobles stood on one side in silk.
On the other, packed in the aisles and on the steps, stood bakers and dockhands and washerwomen, all of them healed that day, and none of them going home.
An old man sat on the throne.
He was thin as a rake, wrapped in a fur robe, and there was a physician on either side of him.
"The King," Nerei whispered, from somewhere behind Shiori's elbow.
"Father," said Aldric.
The Prince had made it to the dais ahead of them, sweating through his white coat.
"Father, the northern savages have laid hands on the Temple. They have broken the sacred circle. Arrest the beast king and his witch at once."
The old king looked at him for a long moment.
"They have broken what?" he said.
"The circle, Father..."
"The circle's seal on two people who had done nothing but work for us." The old king's voice was reedy, but every word reached the doors. "I have been sick a long time, Aldric. I am not stupid."
Behind him the High Priest stood between two guards, hands bound, white robe torn.
He looked not at the king but at the floor.
