Chapter 29: Kessel Estate
"Kessel," Winona said, before I could open my mouth.
She said it.
"Kessel what?" Goldie said. "Kessel Winery? Kessel Place? Kessel and Goldie?"
"Kessel Estate," I said.
Goldie considered it.
"Fine. But I want a sign."
On the first Monday in February, the kid climbed a ladder by the crush pad with a cordless drill.
The whole crew stood underneath him.
All eight of them now, the five who'd stayed and the three who'd walked out with me, back on one crush pad.
The cellar master stood in front with his arms crossed, because somebody had to supervise.
"Don't drop them," he said.
"I won't."
"You drop everything."
"I drove the forklift a whole harvest without hitting a tank."
"You hit two."
"Not hard."
The first brass letter came off the wall with a screech.
The kid passed it down.
The oldest one caught it and put it in a feed bucket.

When he got to the D in ARNOTT, Goldie put her hand up.
