Chapter 18: The Back Booth

I put him in the back booth, under the calendar from the fish market.

My boss brought him a fresh coffee and a slice of pie he hadn't asked for.

She stood over him until he picked up the fork.

"Eat," she said. "You look like a man who's about to tell the truth."

Then she went back to the grill, and I texted Conor: Come now. Back booth.

He was there a few minutes later, with his glasses on his head and his coat unbuttoned.

He slid in next to me and looked at the man across the table.

"This is the investigator," I said. "He called me on the sixteenth."

"I know who he is," Conor said. "He's been on Garner's retainer for six years."

"Five," the man said. "I'm quitting."

He had a thick neck and a rumpled brown suit.

He kept his hands around the cup so we wouldn't see them tremble.

"I'd like this recorded," he said. "So no one can say I was talked into it."

Conor took out his phone, set it face up on the table, and pressed the red circle.

"Go," he said.

The man took a breath.

"Donald hired the family office to find his daughter twenty-four years ago," he said.

"Garner has run the search ever since. Five years back, Garner hired me. I chased every lead I was given."

"And on the sixteenth of October?" I said.
