Chapter 19: Her Remote
Beau's POV
She put the box on the bed at ten o'clock on Friday night and stepped back from it with her hands behind her.
"Open it," Tara said.
I looked at her.
She had her hair down and a robe on.
She had the face she wears at the park when she has decided to throw the ball.
"I'm not in charge of the post office," I said, carefully.
"I didn't send it. I bought it. I went to the store on Hillsborough Street and stood in an aisle for twenty minutes while a boy in a lanyard asked if I needed help."
I opened the box.
A silicone ring, black, no bigger than a napkin ring, lay in tissue.
There was a small bullet set into one side of it.
A green silk scarf lay folded beside it, the one she wears when it's windy.
I recognized the scarf.
I had watched it flap against her neck for two months.
"Tara."
"The ring goes on you," she said. "My phone does the rest. It's the same kind of app, I downloaded it this afternoon. And the scarf is for your wrists."
My mouth went dry.
"You want to tie me up."
"I want to ask you if I can."
She said it plainly, with her chin up and her fingers knotted behind her back, and I understood that she was nervous.
She had asked me for the remote of her life in a truck on Sunday night.
I had been carrying it around for five days.
Now she was asking to take mine.
I'd never had anyone ask.
Girls had asked me to hurry, and one had asked me to hush.
Nobody had ever asked if she could hold me.
"Yes," I said.
"You don't have to."
"I know. Yes."
"You say stop or red," she said, "and I stop. Nothing else stops me."
I laughed, and the laugh shook.
"That's my line."
