Chapter 22: Nothing Between Us
Beau's POV
By midnight the last dish was in the rack, the last guest was gone.
The dogs were asleep in a pile on the new plaid bed in the corner of her bedroom.
I stood in the doorway with a dish towel in my hand.
Tara sat on the edge of the mattress with her hair down and her bare feet on the rug.
She was waiting for me, and I couldn't move.
"You said the whole night," I said.
"I did."
"I've got no phone."
"I put it in the kitchen," she said.
"No egg."
"No."
"No scarf, no ring, no chair," I said.
"No orders," Tara said. "Nobody's in charge. Come here."
I put down the towel.
I crossed the room and stopped in front of her, between her knees, and she tilted her face up into the lamp.
I had looked at that face for eight months.
I had learned it from behind, through the back of a bench, and then from beside, and then on a pillow.
I still hadn't learned it enough.
"Hi," she said.
"Hi."
She put her hands on my belt and did not undo it.
She just held on, with her thumbs hooked through the loops, and looked up at me.
"Kiss me like I'm yours," she said.
I leaned down and kissed her.
It was slow.
Her mouth opened under mine, warm and sure, and she tasted of the wine and the pie and her.
Her hands came up under my shirt and flattened on my back.
I felt each finger.
She drew the shirt over my head, and I let her.
Then I knelt on the rug and undid the buttons of her blouse myself, one at a time, not fast.
There was no rush.
There was a whole night.
When I'd slipped it from her shoulders I kissed every freckle I could reach, left to right.
