Chapter 19: The Boathouse

My father's old boathouse stood in a fishing village on the Camogli coast, and nobody alive but me knew he had kept it.

Ilaria had hated it, and Dario had never been invited.

We came in after dark with the truck lights off and the road closed behind us.

Inside there was a cot, a workbench, a rack of dive tanks, and the smell of rope and salt that I had known since I was six.

Ettore locked the door and stood with his back against it.

"Dario knows the Abyss is the only place I am at peace," he said. "He will look there first."

"Then we are not at the Abyss."

"We have one night."

"I know."

I crossed the room to him and put both hands flat on his chest.

His heart was going hard.

"Tomorrow noon the council votes, and you could be dead before it," I said. "Tonight I decide what we do with the hours."

"Viola."

"Take your shirt off."

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he did.

The stitches on his forearm were clean, and I kissed them first.

I pushed him down onto the cot and knelt between his knees.

"Last night you did all the work," I said. "Tonight you do as you're told."

His mouth twitched.

"Is that an order?"

"Yes."

I undid his belt, slowly, and took his cock in my hand.

It was thick and hard, and it jumped against my palm.

I put my mouth around the head, and he said my name through his teeth.

I took him deeper, and his hand closed in my hair, shaking, not pulling.

"You are going to ruin me," he said hoarsely.

"Good."

I sucked him slowly, then faster, with my tongue under the head, until his hips lifted off the cot.

"Stop," he said. "Viola. Stop."

I let him slide out of my mouth.

His chest was heaving.

"If I finish now, I will not be able to do the rest."
