Chapter 23: The Screen
Viola's POV
The harbor gala filled the ballroom of the Grimaldi terminal, and three hundred guests stood under the chandeliers with glasses in their hands.
Ilaria stood on the little stage in a white dress, with a black ribbon pinned to her shoulder.
A silver-haired Greek shipowner sat beside her at a table with a pen.
The leather folder lay open between them.
"My poor sister is not herself," Ilaria told the room, and she dabbed at her eye with a knuckle. "She nearly died, and now she says terrible things about the family."
"I am only protecting what my father built. Tonight these shares go to a house I trust."
She laid her hand on the contract.
I walked in through the main doors, in the grey dress I had worn to the board, with Ettore at my left shoulder.
My father sat in his wheelchair at my right, and the old chairman pushed it.
The crowd turned.
A woman near the door dropped her glass.
Ilaria saw me, and her smile slipped for half a second, and came back.
"Viola!" she cried. "Thank God. Are you well, darling? You should be in bed."
"I am very well," I said, and walked down the aisle between the tables. "I came to see you sell my father's company."
"Our father's company."
"Mine, by his will, and mine by the board's vote yesterday. The shares in that folder are stolen from a dinner table."
The shipowner put the pen down slowly.
"Signora Grimaldi," he said. "Is this true?"
"She is confused," said Ilaria. "She has a head injury."
"May I show you something?" I said.
I went up the steps to the stage, took the remote from the technician's hand, and turned to the great screen behind the table.
It had been showing the company's logo.
