Chapter 21: The River

I called Teo from the schoolyard.

I remember he said "Stay there" and hung up, and I remember I didn't stay there.

I was walking in circles on the blacktop when something small and white dropped out of the sky onto my hand.

Dilly's bird.

It sat on my knuckles and looked at me with one black eye.

Then it flew to the top of the school fence.

It waited there.

When I took a step toward it, it flew to the stop sign on the corner.

It waited again.

I'd lived three years with a child who said the animals talked to her, and I'd never once believed it.

I'd believed her.

That afternoon it came to the same thing.

I got in the truck.

Teo's car came around the corner as I pulled out, and he jumped into my passenger seat.

His phone was ringing in his hand.

He put it on speaker.

"Teo." Ignazio's voice, warm as soup. "She's fine. She's eating a cookie. Don't upset yourself."

Teo said nothing.

"You'll bring me what your wife took from my desk. And whatever else she's been hiding in my nephew's house. And you'll call off this business at the chapel." A small sigh. "Midnight. I'll tell you where."
