Chapter 11: Papa's Table

"I was fifteen," Giacomo said. "My father drove your mother's car."

I sat very still on the table with his shirt around my shoulders.

"I was in the front seat. You were in the back with her, with your head in her lap."

"I remember the lap."

"I remember the window," he said. "It went white, and then it went red."

I put my hand on his chest.

His heart was pounding again, and not from wanting.

"The man who shot her stepped out of a grey sedan at the light," he said. "I saw his hands. I saw his jacket. He had a press badge clipped on the pocket."

"A press badge."

"I was fifteen. I told your father that night. He said a boy's mind makes things up in a shock."

"And the Baccari?"

"The Baccari had a quarrel with your father that year about the docks. It was the easy name. Your father went to war with them, and the war ran twenty-two years."

"And you never believed it."

"I believed it enough to keep my mouth shut," Giacomo said. "I've been ashamed of that for half my life."

I looked at the closed laptop.

A man in a press jacket had killed my mother.

My husband's father owned the press.

"Take me to him," I said. "Take me to Papa. Now."

My father's house in Bay Ridge was dark except for the kitchen, and he was sitting up in it as if he had known we would come.

Franco stood at the counter eating cold pasta out of a pot.

He took one look at my face and put the fork down.

I set the laptop in the middle of the table and pressed play.

I did not explain it first.

I let them hear Vincent say *Leave the wife.*
