Chapter 17: Hidden in Plain Sight
Every head in the chapel turned back to me.
Tiziana put a hand to her pearls.
"Under this roof," she said softly. "That's what she told you."
Fabrizio didn't bother being soft.
"She dumped him," he said. "Took his money and put him in a hole somewhere. Ask her what she did with the cot."
A woman in the third row crossed herself.
I walked to the front of the chapel and stood beside the Don's casket.
I put my hand on the mahogany, the way I do for every family.
"Your men just went through my home," I said to Fabrizio. "During your stepfather's wake. With his body in the room."
"Looking for my brother."
"He isn't your brother," I said. "And he isn't your business."
Fabrizio took a step out of the pew.
The old capo's cane came down across the aisle in front of him.
It didn't touch him.
It just stayed there.
"Sit down, Fabrizio," the old man said.
"She's hiding him."
The capo didn't raise his voice. "You moved out of her way once already. Do it again."
