Chapter 29: The Widows' Table
The first fund night was a Thursday.
My father used to hold them on Thursdays, once a month, in the main chapel, after the last service of the week.
I hadn't seen one since his funeral.
I set it up the way he did.
The long table across the front.
The ledger in the middle.
The checkbook on the left, the pen on the right, and a chair beside mine for the second signature.
The pallbearer's widow sat in it at five to seven, in her good coat.
She folded both hands on the table.
"I've never signed anything with more than three zeros," she whispered.
"Neither had I," I said. "Until this month."
At seven, I unlocked the front doors.
I thought maybe ten women would come.
Forty came.
They came with their kids and their mothers-in-law and their rent notices folded small in their purses.
They came the way people come to a wake, a little afraid to be the first one through the door.
"Sit anywhere," Amalia told them from the foyer. "Nobody in here bites. Nobody alive, anyway."
