Chapter 17: Clinton Square

Clinton Square was full by noon, with a stage at one end and a banner as wide as a bus.

ALDEN FOR STATE SENATE.

Four hundred people stood on the cold stones with paper coffee cups, and three television trucks idled along the curb.

Dirk stood at the podium in a navy suit, with Delphine's father a step behind him.

In the front row of folding chairs, in a camel coat, Aldo Pellegrino sat with his legs crossed and a small flag in his hand.

He had slept at a motel, and a lot full of mechanics had watched him leave it.

"Fourteen phones filmed him getting into that car," the bus yard foreman told me, low.

"He waved at every one."

I stood at the side of the crowd, and Delphine stood beside me with the box held against her chest.

She had put on a plain gray dress and no jewelry, and she looked ten years older than she had at the club.

"He'll see me before I reach the steps," she said.

"Then walk faster."

Thirty mechanics in work jackets had fanned out through the crowd behind us.
