Chapter 19: The Gate
Dominic had the car at ninety before I finished the sentence.
We came up the gravel road at dusk with the headlights off, and I saw the gate before I saw the guards.
Aldo Pellegrino stood in the middle of it, alone, in his camel coat, with his hands in plain sight.
Two black cars waited behind him on the road, and six men leaned on the doors with their jackets open.
My six men stood twenty feet inside the gate, with their hands on their belts and nobody moving.
Dominic stopped the car and got out without a word.
"Don Ferraro," Aldo said, delighted.
"I was passing, and I thought I'd pay my respects."
"I heard the lake was lovely this time of year."
"Get off my gate," Dominic said quietly.
"I will, in a minute."
Aldo took a photograph from his coat pocket and held it up between two fingers.
