Chapter 23: The Heartbeat
"What have you not asked me?" I said.
Raf lifted his hand from my stomach and sat up against the headboard.
He took something from the drawer of the nightstand.
I had not known it was there.
It was a small gold ring with a dull stone, worn down on one side.
"It was my grandmother's," he said. "I carried it to Chicago in my coat. I did not know why, and it was in my pocket on the platform."
"Raf."
"I knew your face for three years, and I hated it. I had it wrong." His voice was low and not quite steady. "I want to wake up and find it on the pillow beside me. Every day. For the rest of what I have."
"You are asking me to marry you in your underwear."
"I'm asking you with a bullet hole in my arm."
I laughed until I cried.
"Ask me properly," I said.
He got out of the bed and went down on one knee on the cold boards, naked, with the ring in his fist.
"Elena Rinaldi," he said. "Will you marry me?"
I held out my hand.
"Yes."
He pushed the ring onto my finger, and kissed my knuckles, and my wrist, and then the inside of my elbow, and I pulled him back up into the bed.
The doctor's office in Brooklyn was small and smelled of antiseptic.
Teresa came with us, with her handbag in her lap and her rosary in her fist.
It was the first week of February.
I lay on the table with my sweater rolled up and cold gel on my stomach.
Raf stood at my head and held my hand.
The doctor moved the wand, and a gray storm filled the screen.
"There," she said. "Do you see it?"
