Chapter 8: Lower Shelf

Elena's POV

They did not take Dario to a hospital.

Raf's men carried him to a funeral home in Queens that belonged to the Montano family, and washed the glass out of his coat before they laid him down.

I sat by the table for two hours in a room that smelled of lilies and floor wax.

Teresa sat beside me with a rosary and said nothing.

Dario had driven my father for fifteen years.

He had taught me to hold a gun at twelve, in a parking lot on a Sunday, when Papa was in church.

He had bought me ice cream afterward and told me not to tell.

I had called him by his first name since I could talk.

Now he lay with his big hands folded and his scarred eyebrow smoothed flat.

I pressed my fingers to my mouth.

I did not cry again.

I had done that on the highway, and what was left was a hard, cold thing under my ribs.

"He chose to be in front of me," I said.

"Yes," said Teresa.

"He knew he would be."

"Yes."

"He was Sandro's driver, and he sat in the front of that car every day for three years, and Sandro never once asked him if he was loyal."

"Sandro asked him at the table," Teresa said. "With his eyes."

I looked at her.

"I saw that," she said. "I have lived a long time."

I stood up.

The door at the back of the room opened and Raf came in.

He had changed his shirt.

His hands were scrubbed pink and there was a faint cut on the side of his neck where the glass had caught him.

He stopped a few feet from the table.

"The police will call it a robbery," he said. "Two of mine are in the other hospital, and one is dead. Four of Sandro's are in a morgue in Nassau County, and the fifth is gone."
