Chapter 15: On the Record
"Put it down! Put it down now!"
Ezio set the gun on the altar cloth very slowly.
He laid it down.
Then he put his hands up.
"It's my father's grave," he said. "Be careful where you step."
They didn't care where they stepped.
Two cops put him face down on the path between the tombs, in the wet whitewash.
A third one pulled my phone out of my hand.
"Don't stop that recording," I said. "Don't you dare stop it. That's evidence."
He looked at the screen.
The red dot was still glowing.
He didn't stop it.
"Who called you?" I asked.
"Anonymous tip. Grave robbers."
"At midnight. On All Saints. At this exact tomb."
He didn't answer that.
They walked us out through the Basin Street gate in handcuffs.
That was where the cameras were.
Two news vans with their masts already up.
A man with a camera on his shoulder.
A woman in a raincoat holding a microphone.
The lights hit Ezio full in the face.
Platinum hair streaked white with lime, cement dust on his black sweater, his hands behind his back.
"Mr. Severino! Is that the gun that killed your father?"
He didn't turn his head.
I did.
I looked straight into the camera and said, "Ask who sealed it in there."
A cop pushed my head down into the back of a car.
Through the window I saw Fia across the street, on the hood of her hatchback, filming the whole thing on her own phone and screaming at a sergeant in Sicilian.
They let me go at three in the morning.
No charge.
Trespass, they said, and then they didn't write it down.
They kept Ezio.
Murder, first degree.
The weapon was registered to him, found hidden in his own family's tomb, with his fingerprints fresh on the barrel.
